HID, High Intensity Discharge, refers to lighting technology that relies on an electrical charge to ignite Xenon gas in a sealed bulb . HID lighting does not have a filament but instead creates light by igniting an electrical discharge between two electrodes in an air tight tiny quartz capsule filled with Xenon gas. HID lighting is also called Xenon lighting, referring to the gas inside the bulb.

Basically with the HID light bulbs that you get with the HID Xenon kit you have noble gases mixed with the gas Xenon to completely replace the filaments that halogen lights use. These noble gases, and Xenon, are contained in a quartz tube that is connected to two high-voltage electrodes. When electricity is released into the HID bulb and reaches the noble gases there is an arc created. This arc creates a light that is three times more intense than the average halogen bulb.

In addition to all the wonderful things that using the noble gases instead of the filaments gives you, is, how long it lasts. Where as filaments begin to wear down from being bumped around all the time and suffering damage that will eventually causes them to break.  You won't have that problem with the HID kits. Even when your riding off road the bulbs you get from the HID Xenon conversion kit don't break and therefore will last 8 to 10 times longer than the halogen bulbs.
